Jonathan has been training in the martial arts since 1991. In this time he has reached the level of 6th degree black belt (Dan) in Kaizen Ryu Freestyle Karate. In 2022, in recognition of continual teaching efforts, Jonathan was promoted to the rank of Shihan (Master-Teacher).
Jonathan has also achieved 1st Dan ranks in Motobu Ryu Kyu Kobudo Kai, and in Doce Pares Arnis, Eskrima & Kali.
Seeking to further his knowledge and broaden his experience, he has trained in:
Muay Thai Kung Fu Aikido Goju-Ryu Karate Kendo Gracie Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
He competes and referees at ISKA/NSKA tournaments, holding the position of Head Referee and Arbitrator, and was presented with the award for Referee of the Year in 2006. In 2009, Jonathan was inducted into the ISKA Martial Arts Hall of Fame as the Martial Arts Instructor of the Year.
In 2019, 2022 and 2025, he acted as the Head Coach for the Australian Team at the US Open World Martial Arts Championships.
On the 2024 Kings Birthday Honnors list Jonathan received an Order of Austrlia for his services to Martial Arts in Australia
Professionally he works as a General Manager in the Telecomunications Industry and has a Master of Business Administartion & Batchelor of Information Technology.
Olivia has been training with Sydney Karate Club since it opened in 2002. She currently holds the level of 4th Degree Black Belt in Kaizen Ryu Karate and has held the teaching position of Sensei since 2019.
She also holds a 1st Degree Black Belt in Doce Pares Arnis, Eskrima & Kali and a 1st Degree Black Belt in Motobu Ryu Kyu Kobudo Kai
She also competes at ISKA/NSKA tournaments, having won several womans full contact matches and national titles.
In 2023 she was awarded the Kaizen Ryu Black Belt of the year award fro her dedication to teaching and her insperational approach to her 4th Degree Black Belt grading.
Her focus at the Sydney Karate Club is the development of our both our Junior Karate Program and Extreme Karate Program while also often taking the lead with our tournamanet team
Professionally She works as a chemical engineer and holds a Bachelor of Applied Science, Chemistry and a Masters of Science, Science Management Degrees
Robert has been training with the club since he was in early primary school. Now one of our lead instructors, he holds a 1st Degree Black Belt in Kaizen Ryu Karate.
Robert has spent a number of years in addition to his Karate training honning both his Kickboxing and Brazillian Jui-Jitsu skills
Robert is a patient teacher that creativley pushes his students to strive for more and activley encouages them to achive their goals.
Robert teaches classes at all levels, he often can be found on the mats with the smallest of children helping to build their confidence and basic skills then a few lessons later be sparring full contact with a class of adult black belts teching them complex and difficult techniques
Mertkan has studied Karate since he was 9 years old. Now a 2nd Degree Black Belt in Kaizen Ryu Karate, he often teaches a variety of classes at all levels.
He is a very skilled fighter with cross disiplanary skills he has a solid striking and ground game
Mertkan primarily teaches Adult Karate classes with a focus on fight work. However he has also been known to invent some of the most fun games based classes for the youngest of children in the club
Professionally he holds a Bachelors degree in Psychology
